Reputation: 1, I agree with IROC most likely a bad high pressure pump, if you change it buy the rail kit cause when these pumps go bad they keep hitting the pressure protection valve on the rail and wear it out.

USA Posts. USA 13 Posts. I went out today to try to start them but they both crank but no start. When cranking the oil pressure gauge gradually builds but doesnt reach past 20 psi. I am new to school buses and especially the maxxforce engines. One unit is a with roughly 30, miles and the other one is a with 78, miles.
Any idea what could cause the issue? Both buses were running fine when parked both have morning and afternoon routes and we havent had any issues before this. I assume you are talking about MaxxFarce 9's. These things are notorious for this problem and most of believe it is fuel draining back to the tank. I have 5 here and I let them sit since may until two weeks ago and had the same issue.
After a ton of cranking they finally started. I had the same issue with a dozen or so in the last system I was in. Start them often or find out why the fuel drains back. I assume that RonF knows what he's talking about because he has had the same problem, but if it isn't a Maxxforce 9, you will need to look at different things for different engines.
Did you look for sugar on the ground by the filler necks? Happened to a district around here once. I might not be thinking of the same thing, but I've heard that you have to change the entire block if the check valve malfunctions. Does this sound familiar to any Maxforce people?
What is you cranking fuel pressure and injection control pressures?? I also heard that using cheap fuel filters causes issues.
They are all expensive and hard to find American made filters. Foreign made junk should cost end users less but it usually cost you more in other areas.
Like a cheap air filter that a contractor installed. It somehow got rain water intrusion and sucked part of the filter into the engine. I totally forgot to wait for igniter light to flash, and I tried to start the truck, first time it kinda started but died right after I let go the key, second time it took solid 20 seconds to start!
Yes it did start but engine light came on right away!!! Or the engine? Turned the truck off and on couple times, not a single issue, starting right up but darn engine light is still on! What should I do Now? I wouldn't worry about it, I triggered a light on one right before Christmas because of the same thing, and had one this morning set a code for EGR temp erratic. It's just too cold. The light will go out on it's own after a couple or few runs as long as it doesn't detect the problem again.

QuinnzillaDec 9, Dec 11, Depends what fuel system you have but there are inlet check valves built into the fuel water separators that might be starting the leak and allow fuel drain back. Davco the fitting can be changed, but the other one is in the filter head I believe. The other thing is the fuel pump itself is starting to get weak and cannot draw fuel any more on its own.

So we replaced the fuel filters and the air filter. Since replacing the filters the truck acted like the turbo had failed. It had no power and was blowing black smoke out the exhaust. I shut the truck off checked to see if there was oil in turbo inlets everything was fine. Started the truck back up and it ran ok. No power lose. But today the truck acts like its governed at 63MPH. So from idle I can only rev engine to RPMs.
The truck is pulling fine up to rpm. Then its like a dead pedal. If I cycle the key really fast I can rev truck to max rpm and I can accelerate to max governed speed of 80 mph. Has anyone experienced this? Is it the engine throttle valve? If you cannot have that compression you don't get power.

The oil is feed to the head through the side of the oil cooler module.
Oil returns to the pan by gravity. You should never need a head gasket because of an oil leak. I think something else is wrong, if it is even leaking that bad. A number of things can cause low power. The exhaust back pressure valve can be stuck closed so hardly no exhaust gas can exit the engine, or the turbo waste gate actuator can be stuck open so all the boost pressure is dumped out the exhaust.

The actuator is controlled by the ECM by the truck's air system, so make sure your air tanks are fully charged. The actuator rod moves only about 12mm or so.
